Nepal’s Gen-Z protest movement against social media ban has intensified, with demonstrators storming restricted areas, setting fires near Parliament and clashing with security forces. The government has deployed the army, imposed curfew, and called an emergency meeting as unrest spreads across the country.
As per media reports, so far five people have been killed and 80 injured in the ongoing violent protests. The injured have been admitted to hospitals.
A curfew has been imposed in capital Kathmandu from 1230 hours to 2200 hours local time on Monday, 08 September. Army has been deployed outside the prime minister’s residence. Protests have been reported from other cities.
Protesters are opposing social media ban and corruption. Nepalese government has banned social media sites including YouTube, Meta, WhatsApp and X, saying they did not comply to the norms.
