Thousands Protest in Tunisia Demanding Civic Freedoms
Thousands of members and supporters of Tunisia’s General Labour Union (UGTT) protested in the capital, Tunis, on 21 August. The demonstration, one of the largest in recent years, was held to oppose what the union describes as a decline in civic freedoms and union rights. The protest highlights a deepening standoff between the powerful UGTT and President Kais Saied, following a recent transport strike and a subsequent pro-Saied rally urging for the union’s suspension.
