The Republic of Cabo Verde has declared a state of emergency for the islands of São Vicente and Santo Antão in response to deadly floods caused by Tropical Storm Erin. The storm delivered 193 mm (7.6 inches) of rain in just five hours, a volume nearly double the annual average for São Vicente. The event has led to nine confirmed fatalities and has left five people missing. The disaster has also resulted in the displacement of 1,500 individuals and caused significant damage to infrastructure, roads, and homes, prompting a national period of mourning.
