Protests in Bangkok
Protests took place in Bangkok on Saturday, August 2, 2025, with participants calling for the resignation of court-suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. These demonstrations followed a border conflict with Cambodia that “flared in May”, ultimately resulting in over three dozen fatalities and displacing more than 260,000 people. Protesters, many of whom are from conservative and pro-royalist groups, have alleged that the Prime Minister’s close ties with Cambodian leader Hun Sen contributed to the escalation of the conflict. Paetongtarn was suspended from office last month after a controversial leaked phone call. A Malaysian-brokered ceasefire was established on July 29. The political and security situation in the country remains to be tense amidst ongoing protests and political uncertainty.
