Flood Risk Assessment and Earthquake Risk Assessment for a Dual-Site Manufacturing Operation

Flood and Earthquake Risk Assessment

Client: Leading Global Watch & Jewellery Brand
Location: Uttarakhand and Hosur, India
Sector: Manufacturing

Natural hazard events such as floods and earthquakes pose a unique challenge to manufacturers with distributed, high-value production assets. This case study showcases how MitKat Advisory conducted an end-to-end Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) and Earthquake Risk Assessment (ERA) across two strategic manufacturing locations including Uttarakhand and Hosur.

Client Requirement

With two major production units in climatically and geologically sensitive areas,  the client needed to evaluate and mitigate risks through an integrated Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) and Earthquake Risk Assessment (ERA). The core concerns included:

  • Supply Chain Disruption: Critical supply routes and last-mile delivery at risk of disruption from heavy rainfall and flood-induced inaccessibility.
  • Operational Vulnerability: The likelihood of production halts due to inundated access paths, internal movement restrictions, or earthquake-induced infrastructure damage.

The client commissioned MitKat to deliver a detailed analysis of environmental risks affecting supply movement and facility safety.

Our Approach

MitKat’s engagement focused on the following key aspects of Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) and Earthquake Risk Assessment (ERA)

  • Critical Supply Mapping: Identified and mapped each supply path leading to the facility, including vendor routes, utility access, and emergency services.
  • Flood Impact Estimation: Analysed the extent of rainfall and flooding needed to disrupt access or impact critical delivery systems, using flood modelling tools.
  • Seismic Risk Review: Flagged seismic vulnerabilities at the sites using geotechnical zoning and structural assessment inputs.
  • Accessibility Impact Analysis: Evaluated roadways and pathways to determine points of potential isolation or obstruction during flood scenarios.
  • Likelihood Quantification: Provided scenario-based probability ratings for each disruption vector, enabling informed decision-making.

Outcome

  • A clear blueprint of flood and seismic vulnerabilities across both plant locations
  • Quantified thresholds for operational disruption, supply chain exposure, and asset risk
  • Prioritised risk mitigation actions aligned with business continuity plans

By proactively conducting an integrated Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) and Earthquake Risk Assessment (ERA), MitKat empowered the client to transition from reactive to proactive risk management, protecting assets, and supporting long-term planning.
